Altaria (Mega)

Mega Altaria is a Dragon and Fairy type Mega Raid boss. Optimal raid counters will include powerful Ice Steel Poison and Fairy types, with quite a mixed range of different counters available to help you defeat it.

Depending on your levels and counters, we would recommend 3-5 trainers who are high level, and more if you don’t have optimal teams.

This guide will tell you how to beat this beautiful Mega, as well as its optimal stats, moves and CP range.

With a wide range of counters and a fair few different type weaknesses thanks to that Dragon and Fairy dual typing, most trainers should find themselves able to whip up a strong team of counters. Many trainers will have a strong army of Meteor Mash Metagross they can flex here, and the likes of Gengar, Beedrill, Gardevoir, Glaceon and Mamoswine have all seen their pre-evolutions featured in Community Days so have been fairly widely available.

For more budget counters you can check out the whole counters list here, but Roserade, Weavile, Scizor and Aggron all make an appearance, so keep them in mind.

How to Get Mega Altaria

You cannot catch Altaria in its mega evolved form from the raid. The mega raid boss is always catchable in its base form and as such, the CP ranges are for a regular Altaria.

Altaria can be caught with the following CP values:

  • 1081 – 1145 CP no weather boost
  • 1352 – 1432 CP boosted by Windy or Cloudy weather boost

In order to get Mega Altaria you will need 200 Mega Energy for the initial evolution, then 40 Mega Energy to evolve the same Altaria again in the future. Mega Energy can be obtained via Mega Altaria Raids, and once you have evolved Mega Altaria, you can earn 5 Mega Energy per candy while walking it as your buddy. You can walk any Swablu or Altaria to earn Mega Energy, as long as you have previously evolved one to register it to your Mega Pokédex.

Fast Moves Charge Moves
  • Peck Flying
  • Dragon Breath Dragon
  • Dazzling Gleam Fairy
  • Moonblast* Fairy
  • Dragon Pulse Dragon
  • Sky Attack Flying

For optimal DPS Peck and Dazzling Gleam are the way to go. However, if you are using to to battle specific Pokémon in raids, tailor your moves towards those. For Dragon types opt for Dragon Breath and Dragon Pulse, for Fighting types Peck and Sky Attack, and for Dark types Peck and Dazzling Gleam.

Conclusion

Mega Altaria isn’t exactly a top tier Mega Pokémon in terms of its ability as an attacker, but it is certainly one of the most beautiful! It doesn’t have the best attack stats, or moveset, but it does have some decent bulk so can be a great addition to your team as a Mega to boost the attacks of other Pokémon your fellow trainers are bringing into the raid. It can boost both Fairy and Dragon type attackers, and because it is so bulky it can do this for a decent length of time, perfect for short manning raids, or getting them done as quickly as possible!
